PARTICIPATION / SMALL PRACTICE
From hotel to neighborhood
A first trip gets richer when one ordinary block becomes familiar enough to notice twice.
THE SHORT VERSION
- Repeat one morning route before adding another landmark.
- Learn the name of one food, street or transit stop in Chinese.
- Spend where daily life is happening without treating it as scenery.
Choose a repeatable radius
Pick a market, park, breakfast place or transit stop close enough to revisit. Familiarity makes differences visible that a one-pass itinerary hides.
Be a customer, not an observer
Buy something you understand, wait your turn and learn the local payment or ordering sequence. Participation should create ordinary value for the place, not extract a performance.
Write what changed
Record the assumption you arrived with and the detail that complicated it. That tension is more useful than a confident verdict.
